May Mural: Community Play at NewHolly

When NewHolly was redeveloped around the year 2000, it was the first new neighborhood in Seattle in 50 years. Located on the site of the former Holly Park public housing community, NewHolly features nearly 1,400 units of housing affordable to households with a wide range of incomes. It has quiet, tree-lined streets, parks, playgrounds and a broad array of community services.

This year, LINK surveyed staff and community members to learn what themes they’d like to see in their next mural, and guest artist Santa Mercita has used their responses to create a beautiful people & nature-packed design to brighten up the wall of one of the NewHolly gathering spaces. On May 17th, LINK students, family, friends, volunteers, and NewHolly community members will come together to paint the mural with music, food, and lots of brushes.

Family and friends are welcome! If you’re bringing guests, please have them sign up here by May 12th so we’ll know how many people are coming. Students, please RSVP by Monday, May 12th at 8pm.

TIMING: LINK students will attend from 10am - 3:00pm, and volunteers and community members will join a shift between 8:30am - 3:30pm to spread out the mural engagement.

SAFETY: Step ladders will be part of the mural painting process. There will be some parts of the mural that are possible to paint without ladders, but always make sure to follow all safety guidelines when painting.

Students: We’re preparing for our annual End-of-Year Celebration and Gallery Show on June 10th! Grades 9-11, please bring 1-4 pieces you would like to submit for the gallery show. Grade 12, bring 2-6 pieces.

About the Artist

Santa Mercita is the artist name gifted to Thania Guerra by her ancestors. Born in Siguatepeque, Honduras and now based in Seattle, Washington, she is a self-taught graphic designer, illustrator, and multidisciplinary artist whose work centers storytelling as a form of self-actualization and collective liberation.

Her practice is rooted in ancestral knowledge and cultural memory, drawing inspiration from the richness of her Central American heritage. With family origins in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, Santa Mercita weaves the sacred into her work. Symbols like coffee, bay leaves, garlic, rice, and the elements appear throughout her pieces, offering protection, abundance, and remembrance. The name "Honduras", meaning "depths", speaks to her intimate relationship with water and the life it sustains. Her color palettes, vibrant and intentional, reflect the bold energy of her roots.

Cuando NewHolly se remodeló en torno al año 2000, fue el primer barrio nuevo de Seattle en 50 años. Situado en el solar de la antigua comunidad de viviendas públicas de Holly Park, NewHolly cuenta con casi 1.400 unidades de vivienda asequible para hogares con una amplia gama de ingresos. Tiene calles tranquilas y arboladas, parques, zonas de juego y una amplia gama de servicios comunitarios.

Este año, LINK encuestó al personal y a los miembros de la comunidad para saber qué temas les gustaría ver en su próximo mural, y la artista invitada Santa Mercita ha utilizado sus respuestas para crear un hermoso diseño lleno de gente y naturaleza para alegrar la pared de uno de los espacios de reunión de NewHolly. Estudiantes: Nos estamos preparando para nuestra celebración anual de fin de año y exposición en la galería el 10 de junio. Grados 9-11, por favor traigan 1-4 piezas que les gustaría presentar para la exposición de la galería. Grado 12, traer 2-6 piezas.

Sobre la artista

Santa Mercita es el nombre artístico que sus antepasados le dieron a Thania Guerra. Nacida en Siguatepeque (Honduras) y afincada en Seattle (Washington), es una diseñadora gráfica, ilustradora y artista multidisciplinar autodidacta cuyo trabajo se centra en la narración como forma de autorrealización y liberación colectiva.

Su práctica se basa en el conocimiento ancestral y la memoria cultural, inspirándose en la riqueza de su herencia centroamericana. Con orígenes familiares en Honduras, Guatemala y El Salvador, Santa Mercita entreteje lo sagrado en su trabajo. Símbolos como el café, el laurel, el ajo, el arroz y los elementos aparecen en sus piezas, ofreciendo protección, abundancia y recuerdo. El nombre «Honduras», que significa «profundidad», alude a su íntima relación con el agua y la vida que sustenta. Sus paletas de colores, vibrantes e intencionadas, reflejan la atrevida energía de sus raíces.
