Event Details
Stencil technique in visual art is also referred to as pochoir. In this "Maker Edition" of LINK, you will be creating your very own custom stencil out of a thin sheet of material, such as wood, plastic, or potentially metal, with letters or a design cut from it. You will learn how to design with computer software to create a re-usable stencil, and then have your design laser cut out of provided materials. You will also learn about positive and negative shapes, connecting stencil islands (sections of material that are inside cut-out "holes" in the stencil) to other parts of the stencil with bridges (narrow sections of material that are not cut out), morphing digital to a physical object. Come to this exciting workshop and gain awareness of the Seattle builder & maker community—which is a driving the STEAM education platform (science, technology, engineering, art, math).
Stencil paintings of hands were common throughout the prehistoric period
Stencils may have been used to colour cloth
Stencils were popular as a method of book illustration
A related technique (which has found applicability in some surrealist compositions) is aerography, in which spray-painting is done around a three-dimensional object to create a negative of the object instead of a positive of a stencil design.
Stencils are frequently used by official organizations, including the military, utility companies and governments, to quickly and clearly label objects
Stencils have also become popular for graffiti, since stencil art using spray-paint can be produced quickly and easily.Empowering Creative Minds
MAKERHAUS is at the intersection of technology and craftsmanship where you will find the latest 3D printers alongside manual milling machines. Their goal is to provide the resources, education and community for creative minds to make, invent, prototype and explore without boundaries.
