“Fast fashion” is clothing that’s designed to be worn a few times before being thrown out. It comes from big companies who want us to buy more things while hurting the people who actually make the product. But it can also be a cheap way to get cool clothes. If we want our clothes to be cool and accessible, what should we do instead?

Enter clothing resiliency! This January, we’re teaming up with Cultivate South Park to deliver our workshop as a kickoff for the neighborhood’s year of making and modifying clothes at the small scale. From costumes to earth-and-people-friendly fashion, guest designer and artist Emily Candela McLaughlin will introduce us to different applications for clothing design.

After introductions, Emily will show us simple techniques for remixing recycled clothing and other creative materials. Then, we’ll work together in teams to create clothing design ideas, sketches, and bring our plans to life using a big pile of clothing and an eccentric assortment of mannequin torsos.

LOCATION NOTE: This workshop is held at the beautiful South Park Hall to give us plenty of space to move around our mannequins. Stairs are required for access. It's near bus stops for Route 60 and Route 132. Free parking is also available.

| About the Artist

Emily paints, assembles, sews and builds blends of ideas and symbols. Mythologies and permutations of our collective dreams and cultural references surface across the mixed media of her work. Her materials range across paint mediums, collages, textiles, wig-making and costume design. Emily has worked in professional and educational theaters around Seattle for many years, including Seattle Childrens’ Theater, the Paramount, the 5th Ave and ACT. Her work exists in public space as murals, and has been part of art installations, gallery exhibits, digital displays, theater productions and art fairs in Seattle and local areas, New York City, Art Basel Miami, and won awards in international online competitions.

Emily pinta, ensambla, cose y construye mezclas de ideas y símbolos. Mitologías y permutaciones de nuestros sueños colectivos y referencias culturales afloran a través de las técnicas mixtas de su obra.
