Event Details

The printed word holds power and weight. And in letterpress, a form of relief printing using pressure and ink, that weight is tangible. Visual designer and letterpress printer Amy Redmond will lead students through a hands-on exploration of how a typeface’s style, size, & placement — combined with color and imagery — amplify the meaning words have. Working in the letterpress studio at Seattle’s School of Visual Concepts, students will use wood type and existing imagery to experiment both on- and off-press with hand-inking and overprinting. We’ll discuss our how the limits of these tools enhance the creative process, creating delightful effects that are unique to letterpress. Students will walk away with a small collection of their printed work and a basic understanding of how the limitations of historic, analog technology has relevance in the modern digital age.
