Character Development and Design: The Interplay of Story
With the starting point of "divine triads" — found in most ancient cultures such as the ancient Greek and Roman Fates and the Norse Norns — the workshop will explore the importance of character arcs in character design. Making clear that a character's full story is integral to the character's "look" and briefly introducing a notion of thematic structure. The workshop's goal is to inspire students to process ideas through the full context available to their individual imagination and awareness. From this conceptual framework, they will be encouraged to "trust themselves" so they can move through the sea of possibilities into a practical execution of their workshop assignment. Students will illustrate a character of their design in triple form, along the lines of "maiden, mother, and crone", which could be different versions of the same character at three distinct points of that character's life story, or three characters that together well represent the key facets or boundaries of a story's theme.
